This is the latest installment on my series of tutorial videos, this time dealing with hand gestures during presentations. I chose to let the hands do the talking for this particular video. =)
The video is an expansion based on Secret 7 of my book The 10 Secrets of Power Presentations (now available to you as a free eBook when you subscribe to Hafihz.com). There were certain topics in the book which I could not convey fully on paper as I can face-to-face. However with the advent of e-video productions, InsyaAllah more supplementary videos will be produced for readers like you.
Here are 3 key points in addition to the video:
- It’s worthwhile to invest in a media pointer (presentation controller), especially when you are in the habit of presenting in teams. No longer do you need to worry about synchronizing mouse clicking and clumsy transitions (”…next…”) as you are in control of your slide, and you choose when the next slide can come up. Plus, having a controller on your strong hand would naturally guide your other hand to gesturing well. Really.
- Hand gestures should work hand in hand with all other presentation elements like the slides, the voice, the body language to create the overall experience. Just like the other elements, hand gestures must have meaning.
- Practice hand gestures by recording yourself, or by getting a friend to look at you and how you move your hands during presentations. Trying to correct hand gestures by rehearsing in front of the mirror is like trying to drive and writing your mistakes… at the same time. Realism kicks in when you practice by presenting, just presenting, and you leave the worrying and feedback through an external voice like the video recorder or your friend after the presentation is done. More efficient and effective.
