The World’s First Guide To Throwing Your Graduation Cap

My first experience with throwing something akin to a graduation cap was back in my national service days in police, when, at the passing out parade, we decided to cuddle together, countdown (3-2-1) and throw our police caps high into the air. These were the lessons learnt from that incident:
- As much as you’re happy, don’t throw your cap when you’re standing in a muddy field.
- When throwing your cap, stand at a distance away from the next excited member. Smiling on one second and getting elbowed in the face in the next second can be rather traumatizing.
- When throwing your cap, have some sort of an indicator just in case you lose sight of your cap in the midst of all the others. With that in mind…
- As much as you’d like to pose after throwing your cap, keep your eyes on that flying cap… and on incoming caps. Remember, even in those joyous occasions, gravity’s still there.
- When your cap lands on the floor, retrieve it quickly before someone steps on it.
So with these reminders in mind, I was all ready to throw my graduation cap at my commencement ceremony yesterday. Let’s begin the tips:
The World’s First Guide To Throwing Your Graduation Cap
- Snap a picture of your group before throwing your cap. This helps warm you up and reminds you of where you are in space and time (there are some who, at the thought of throwing, forget that the steps are right behind them. Ouch.)

- Take your caps and pose with them in your hand, as though you are about to throw. This helps you to plan and reminds you to throw vertically up (and not behind hitting the uncle who is taking pictures).

- With a gentle yet swift vertical toss, throw up in the air, and smile. The cameras start flashing then. Remember to keep still and pose (Like me, on the right).

- After the flashes, run for your life as you keep your eyes on your cap and the falling caps and your running friends. (pic removed due to graphical nature).
- Recover your cap.
I hope that with this guide, you are able to celebrate that throwing of the graduation cap with better finesse, and at the same time keep the cap in good condition.
