Today as I walked into the gates of Masjid Al-Iman for Friday prayers, I saw a  Madrasah student, a bright young girl with a donation tin. I smiled and walked pass her, into the masjid.

At the end of the sermon delivered at the minbar, the khatib paused awhile before speaking to the audience. Now in Singapore many Imams read off the printed papers carrying the day’s khutbah, delivered from the country’s  Islamic Religious Council office. As such, the message sometimes is diluted from the lack of compassionate delivery, as it appears to come from the paper than from the heart.

In that moment however, the Imam spoke to the gathering without any papers or any cards, and reminded the faithful that outside the masjid, there are a group of students with donation tins. Outside the masjid are students whose institution has raised many ulamas in Singapore. An instution which has given much contribution to the Islamic landscape in Singapore. He reminded us that now, that institution needs our help, and urged us to give what we can, so that we may receive God’s blessings, and help the institution as well. He then recited the doa. The amin was loud.

A message from the heart. After the prayers, I went out, and queued, as others were reaching into their pockets, moved by their hearts, towards that humble girl and her donation tin.
