For this site at least. Currently they’re just not targeted enough in dealing with sensitive keywords, especially when your site talks about “religion”. Ads that may be displayed can range from anti-religious views to sites which talk about all things conspiracy. Sure you can block out slowly, but that one view and negative impression of your site can generate bad word of mouth that spreads faster than you can in filtering the stuff. I estimate the potential costs to be more than the earnings you might make off the ads, primarily in branding.

On the same topic, if you do put up ads on your site, my recommendation is that ensure that the ads fit everytime. So each time you place an add, try beat that money thought with the Ad Fit question. It makes good business sense. Web ads fit when:

  1. They target the same target audience that your site is targeting.
  2. The offering they offer synergizes the site’s offerings.
  3. The ad looks neat and doesn’t ruin your site design.

This ad-fit problem can especially infect owners with multiple sites, who then might choose to vantage their distribution channels by using whatever ad space they can get since it’s their own page, even if it means selling their homemade cheesecake at their car review site. Check your site to see if your ad fits.
