My friend was telling me how one of his blogging students had requested him to do a website for her small business. Now get this… she’s in the business of organizing football matches. And she has the vision for a website. Kudos.
Having a website for just about any business should be advantageous, right? Hmm, worth pondering. So I did the normal mathematical way to solve such problems: assume the opposite and prove otherwise. The result is this list of conditions that I think will answer the question…
Why You Don’t Need a Website:
- If you are a super monopoly. You have secured some sort of a super barrier to entry, plus you’re in a collusion with other big players. As far as I know, even oil doesn’t fit this model anymore.
- If your business is not on planet Earth. Seriously. The world is covered in the world wide web. And with more staple applications now hooked up to the net, this means that phrases such as “first-mover advantage” and “unique selling proposition” will soon become extinct. Everyone can see what you’re doing. And if you don’t wish to be seen on the web, then no one can see you. Simply put it, you won’t matter. So if you are intending not to have a site, remember that your earth-competitors then have a one-up. I suggest moving your business to the moon (but with Japan launching their orbiters there too, you might have to consider other planets).
- If your business TOTALLY does not depend on networks and externalities. The universe must revolve around you in this case. Such a model could have worked pre-copernicus.
And if you’re calculating the costs and returns, here are the facts:
- Cost: As low as zero. There are some success stories of businesses running on blog engines. This means that they did not purchase any domain and server.
- Cost Justification: If you can justify your returns on namecard printing, putting a sign outside your office, saying “Hello, XYZ Company. How can I help you?” when receiving a call, then the same logic of returns is on the website.
- Returns: Visibility, Branding, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Information Search, Data Analysis, Competitive Advantage, Interactivity… …
Google has already replaced the phrase “find information on”. Don’t miss the boat.
